Ghost Story
Ghost Story is a movie based on the novel of the same name by Peter
Straub. It starts off with a man in a room with a woman lying
face down on a bed. The man keeps asking who the woman is and
when he goes to the bed and rolls her over he sees something so
terrifying that he pitches backwards through a closed window and
plummets to his doom. Elsewhere a group of four old men sit in a
darkened room with one of them telling a scary story and frightening
the others. One of the old timers is the father of the man who
fell. Upon hearing the news he calls his other son and asks him
to come home for the funeral. The other son does so and becomes
tangled in the real ghost story that has haunted these old men for a
long time and becomes less and less just a story as the movie flows
along.
Ghost story is a good adaptation of Straub's novel that follows the
book for the most part but where it diverges it does so well. As
a horror movie this is a really good one. There are some good
scares, some tension, and a really good overall feel. The
locations and interiors for this film are spectacular, a complete joy
to watch. The special effects seem to only get better as the
film carries on culminating in a climax that is nearly surreal and
totally chilling. The story is of course excellent and the script
nearly as good. The acting is strong for the most part and the
directing was well done. The casting was good and surprising to
boot, can you imagine dance legend Fred Astaire as the star of a horror
movie? Watch Ghost Story and there will be no more need to
imagine it.
